CD Opinion: Modern Day Mountain Man – Jared Pete Gile-
Stan Moffat

Payne County Line Jared “Pete” Gile has written all 15 songs on “Modern Day Mountain Man”, and quickly establishes himself as a singer/songwriter who is here to stay! It is not easy breaking into this business of original music, but it is easier if you understand you have to have some basic character traits to succeed. It takes determination, patience, talent, tenacity, sharing the feelings in your soul that others never share, and the ability to never ever get impatient! In this spirit, it is easy to see that Jared Pete Gile will succeed, for all the traits are his. The day I received the cd, I threw it in the ole cd player, expecting it to be kind of like most, but low and behold, it was completely different.. While the cd is with full band made up of super talented artist and musicians, the lyrics this ole Kansas boy wrote really stand out and make this one of the most enjoyable cd’s to listen to. In not too long a time, in the 15 songs on the cd, this writer has one’s mind working in overdrive to keep up. The “mind” pictures he paints with his well chosen lyrics are sometimes unbelievable, yet somehow, one realizes that we have all been in his pictures, one time or the other. This cd is solid from start to finish, with a hidden treasure in the middle… Jared is joined by Mike McClure of the Mike McClure Band, performing Till I Find Myself. In this one song, one comes to realize that this 15 song CD is somewhat like that ole pair of jeans you hate to throw out.. ‘cause they really fit and fit well! Gile paints various pictures from a young man finding himself, being a lover of the land, being inebriated, road trippin to Texas, watching love kill a fellow man, hurting hearts, to love finding it’s way back home.

The musicians accompanying Jared are some of the best in the business. Besides Mike McClure, Jared is joined by Rankin Peters, Jeremy Watkins, Rodney Pyeatt, Brad Rice, Howard Reed, Steve Palousek, and Amanda Brown. These folks are among the best of the best, and their talent really stands out, but, I am still amazed by Jared’s songwriting abilities! If you want to listen to solid well-written lyrics, performed by a good vocalist, who is accompanied by talented musicians, this is your cd! But beware, you will be in for quite a ride!! Jared Pete Gile may be a Kansas singer/songwriter, yet his songs reflect images from all of America, and because of this, we will be hearing more of this young writer in the future!

College defined. Road trips and new friends. Moral struggles and soul-seeking. Hearts connecting and hearts breaking.

Jared “Pete” Gile, a local singer/songwriter, weaves these college memoirs and many more into the lyrics of his music. His debut CD, “Modern Day Mountain Man,” contains 15 self-written songs.

“I’m a songwriter who happens to sing — not a singer who happens to write songs,” said Gile, a 2002 K-State graduate from Scandia, Kan. “Writing is therapy for me. Just to write my feelings sometimes can be a tremendous release.

“I look up to prolific and timeless writers like John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot — people who write from the heart and not for the money. When someone writes what they’re hurting or sad or happy about, that’s what makes the really great songs.”

Gile said he writes what he feels and doesn’t tailor his music to a specific audience.

Casey Richard, senior in milling science and management, said he appreciates that Gile writes his own tracks.

“It means more to me as a listener that he actually writes the songs and puts his own feelings in them instead of someone else’s. His music is easy for me to relate to,” Richard said.

One of Gile’s songs, “Back 40 Lover,” contains the line “working alongside your family might be the best part of all.”

“Because I was raised on a family farm, that line has real meaning for me,” Richard said. “There’s also a song, ‘Til I Find Myself,’ that every college student should be able to relate to.”

Gile performs his original music, as well as cover songs, at many gigs in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska and Missouri. Richard said he and his friends listen to Gile’s music in many different settings.

“We pop in his CD when we are sitting around playing cards. But it’s even better to hear him live. Most of my friends go to his concerts, so it’s a blast,” Richard said.

“I’ve seen two completely different spectrums. One Sunday night at Chance, the atmosphere was laid-back and mellow,” Richard said. “Complete opposite of that was a night at Fat’s with people partying, hollering and dancing around. I guess most of his shows are somewhere in between, because we like to hear his songs but also to have a good time.”

Gile said there are many different styles of music on his CD, and it is hard to lump them into one genre.

“I would call it alternative country or Americana. It’s pretty loose anymore as to what people call music. I like to leave it up to the crowd to decide,” Gile said.

Whatever the classification, he joins a growing movement centered around a group of musicians in the Texas and Oklahoma areas.

The market for this red-dirt music is growing rapidly in Kansas.

Matt Church, owner of Shotz, said Gile has very loyal fans and draws in a good crowd.

“Pete’s music is like storytelling. His fans understand and relate to what he is singing,” Church said.

Gile recently added a band to his solo acoustic act. The Pete Gile Band includes Gile as lead vocalist; Adam Alexander, lead guitar and harmony vocals; Alex Theisen, drums and percussion; Howard Reed, keyboard; and Nick Jefferson, bass.

The band’s Manhattan debut will be 9 p.m., Feb. 27, at Bobby T’s Bar & Deli.

“It was hard finding people who were dedicated to the music and were good, too,” Gile said. “I’m really digging the sound we have and looking forward to our debut.”

The band will focus on getting the current CD to the Texas and Oklahoma markets for the next couple of years, Gile said. After that, he hopes to record another album.

“Right now, I’m just enjoying what I’m doing,” Gile said. “I love having a crowd that actually listens and knows the words to my music rather than having me just be background noise for them to get drunk to.

“When the audience is connecting to and digging my music, that’s what makes me the happiest.”

Kansas singer releases debut disc.

Jared “Pete” Gile wrote all 15 songs on “Modern Day Mountain Man” cd Courtland, KS, Aug. 19 – The greatest singers all had to get their start somewhere. One young artist hopes his road to musical success begins in Kansas and stretches to Nashville and beyond.

It is not easy breaking into the music business. It takes determination, patience and most importantly, talent. Kansas, home of wheat fields, the Jayhawks, the Wildcats, and a singer/songwriter looking for his break. His name is Jared Gile. Everyone calls him “Pete.” The Kansas countryside is where he developed the country side of his music. “Yeah, it sure was. I mean, I grew up working for farmers so I had a lot of long hours on tractors being able to think of songs and stuff to write about so yeah. I think it is played a big part in my writing. I would say it is a cross between country music and folk and maybe Americana,” said Gile. Gile may have grown up in small-town Kansas, but it was his meeting with a country music superstar hundreds of miles from here that really inspired him to get serious about his music. “Actually in 1999, I had the opportunity to meet Willie Nelson for the first time. Since then, I have met him four or five times at different concerts and stuff. Just a real nice guy,” said Gile. Willie Nelson has recorded more than 100 albums in his career. Pete has just one, his first, called “Modern Day Mountain Man.” He wrote all 15 songs on it, each with its own unique story.
“One I wrote when I had spent a summer in Colorado a few years ago and it is called “Watching Fireworks Alone,” said Gile. “I went to a country music show with a fireworks show afterwards and I went to it alone and as the fireworks were going off around me, I looked around and everybody was there with their loved ones, kissing you know, and I was sitting there alone and I thought how lonely a feeling it was to be there watching these fireworks by myself,” said Gile. Gile is a songwriter who sings, not a singer who just happens to write. “I would rather be known as the writer than the artist, but I will continue down this road of music any way I can,” said Gile. A road this young singer hopes stretches on, and on, and on. Pete said he is a little bit nervous about his new cd. He is also very proud of it.

Even with a last minute venue change, fans of local singer/songwriter Jared “Pete” Gile packed into the small Cafe Gaston in anticipation of hearing songs off his new album. Gile was originally scheduled to play at a different location but when the venue closed because of legal reasons, he was forced to find somewhere else.

Although not the smoke filled bar that he usually plays in, the crowd still packed in to the point where it was standing room only. Standing on a diminutive stage, Gile worked a few covers into the set list that was mostly comprised of original songs that told the story of the young singer’s life. Although his life is short, it is filled with an understanding and a depth that is far beyond his age. Ripping the audiences heart out with songs like “Running Low on Angels” and following it up by filling everyone with laughter with “Just How Drunk,” Gile told stories of heartache, death, drinking, and a young man’s woes of trying to get laid.

Working as a solo performer, Gile interacts with the audience through quirky little stories and funny anecdotes. There are stories for every song that he plays, and stories that show how each song is a part of him. His excellent display of flat and finger picking demonstrates his skills with his Takamine six string guitar. The guitar show signs of being a partner to Giles for many years now, and more than likely many more to come. Children as young as four years old and adults as old as 90 tapped their feet or clapped their hands as the blue eyed singer held them captivated.

Gile ended his show by taking requests from the audience. Numerous songs were shouted out with Gile saying no to most of them. He finally settled on one request that showcased his musical knowledge — Hank Williams. Evidence of Giles’ influences can be heard throughout his music guys like, Haggard, Nelson, Jennings, and so on. He is showing that there is still hope for country music, despite being in the pre-fabricated Nashville world.

Gile will be touring throughout the Midwest region including, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Don’t miss your chance to go see him. He is celebrating the release of his new CD More of Me. It showcases his growing skills as a musician and a maturity in his voice that was not as present on his previous CD.

All of Giles music can be purchased through his website, or he can be reached via his MySpace page.

“…His voice was smooth and captivating and his interaction with the audience was enthralling. Pete gave us an 8 song, half hour set of song and story which showcased his versatility as a singer, a songwriter, and a musician on the guitar and the harmonica. The first three songs were all twists on the classic “love lost” theme, leaving us to believe that was Pete’s forte. We were wrong. Although he is indeed masterful in the art of the love ballad, he slips just as comfortably into autobiographical tunes, and good time drinking songs….”
